Little, Brown, and Company, Boston, 1898, Illustrated Edition, first printing thus.  Antiquarian hard cover, 106 pages including Appendix, plus two pages of ads for author's other works.  Brown boards with gilt illustration and lettering on front, slightly faded gilt lettering on spine; spine and 2 cm strip into front board faded; small spots and rubs.  Corners bumped and show wear with small sections of board exposed.  Spine bottom shows small losses and splits; small section of top spine lost.  Binding is sound; outer page block has age-toning and a touch of foxing.  Prior owner's name and date inked on front paste-down; ex libris impression of another owner on first two pages.  Black & white frontispiece with tissue guard intact.  Pages clean and unmarked, lightly tanned; very occasional small fox spot.  Profusely illustrated in black & white by Frank S. Merrill.  Book in very nice condition for its age.  Philip Nolan, an American Army Lieutenant, renounces his country when he is tried for treason.  It is ordered that he spend the rest of his days serving on various naval ships, but no one is allowed to speak to him about his country.
